| यियक्षमाणेनाहूतः पार्थेनाथ द्विषन्मुरम् । वैद्यं प्रति प्रतिष्ठासुरासीत् कार्यद्वयाकुलः ॥ १ ॥ |
Summoned by Arjuna, the enemy of Mura, Lord Krishna, who is always engaged in two important tasks, arrived with Uddhava and Satyaki. |
| सार्धमुद्धवसीरिभ्यामथासावासदत्सदः । गुरूकाव्यानुगां बिभ्रच्चान्द्रीमभिनभः श्रियम् ॥ २ ॥ |
He adorned the assembly hall, carrying the moon-like splendor (in conjunction with गुरूकाव्यानुगां – Followed by Jupiter and Venus on the sky). |
| जाज्वल्यमाना जगतः शान्तये समुपेयुषी । व्यद्योतिष्ट सभावेद्यामसौ नरशिखित्रयी ॥ ३ ॥ |
Radiant for the peace of the world, he shone in the assembly hall, illuminating it with his presence. |
| रत्नस्तम्भेषु संक्रान्तप्रतिमास्ते चकाशिरे । एकाकिनो पि परितः पौरुषेयवृता इव ॥ ४ ॥ |
The statues on the gem-studded pillars appeared as if surrounded by human beings, though they stood alone. |
| अध्यासामासुरुत्तुङ्गहेमपीठानि यान्यमी । तैरुहे केसरिक्रान्तत्रिकूटशिखरोपमा ॥ ५ ॥ |
They occupied the high golden seats, resembling the peaks of the Trikuta mountain, conquered by the lion. |
| गुरूभयस्मै गुरुणोरुभयोरथ कार्ययोः । हरिर्विप्रतिषेधं तमाचचक्षे विचक्षणः ॥ ६ ॥ |
The wise Lord Krishna, addressing the two Gurus, explained the matter of the two tasks. |
| द्योतितान्तःसभैः कुन्दकुड्मलाग्रदतः स्मितः । स्नपितेवाभवत् तस्य शुद्धवर्णा सरस्वती ॥ ७ ॥ |
With a smile that revealed his teeth like jasmine buds, Saraswati, the goddess of pure speech, seemed to bathe in his presence. |
| भवद्गिरामवसरप्रदानाय वचांसि नः । पूर्वरङ्गः प्रसङ्गाय नाटकीयस्य वस्तुनः ॥ ८ ॥ |
For the sake of the words of the wise, this prelude serves as an introduction to the dramatic subject. |
| करदीकृतभूपालो भ्रातृभिर्जित्वरैर्दिशाम् । विनाप्यस्मदलंभूष्णुरिज्यायै तपसः सुतः ॥ ९ ॥ |
The son of Tapas, who had conquered the kings with his brothers, was fit for worship even without our help. |
| उत्तिष्ठमानस्तु परो नोपेक्ष्यः पथ्यमिच्छता । समौ हि शिष्टैराम्नातौ वर्त्स्यन्तावामयः स च ॥ १० ॥ |
One who desires the right path should not neglect the rising sun, for the learned have declared that both the disease and the remedy will follow the same path. |
| ११. न दूये सात्वतीसूनुर्यन्मह्यमपराध्यति । यतु ददह्यते लोकमतो दुःखाकरोति माम् ॥ |
11. “I am not distressed because the son of Satyavati has wronged me. Rather, I am grieved because the world is burning and this causes me pain.” |
| १२. मम तावन्मतमदः श्रूयतामङ्ग वामपि” ज्ञातसारे पि खल्वेकः संदिग्धे कार्यवस्तुनि ॥ |
12. “First, let my opinion be heard, O gentle one. Even if one knows the essence, in a matter of doubt, one should seek clarity.” |
| १३. यावदर्थपदां वाचमेवमादाय माधवः । विरराम महीयांसः प्रकृत्या मितभाषिणः ॥ |
13. “Taking the words with their intended meaning, Madhava, who is naturally of few words, paused.” |
| १४. ततः सपत्नापनयस्मरणानुशयस्फुरा । ओष्ठेन रामो रामौष्ठबिम्बचुम्बनचुञ्चुना ॥ |
14. “Then, recalling the removal of his rivals, Rama bit his lip, as if kissing the red lips of Rama.” |
| १५. विवक्षितामर्थविदस्तत्क्षणं प्रतिसंहृताम् । प्रापयन् पवनव्याधेर्गिरमुत्तरपक्षतम् ॥ |
15. “The wise one, understanding the intended meaning, immediately conveyed the words of the wind-god, which were in the form of a reply.” |
| १६. घूर्णयन् मदिरास्वादमदपाटलितद्युती । रेवतीदशनोच्छिष्टपरिपूतपुटे दृशौ ॥ |
16. “With eyes reddened by the taste of wine, and purified by the remnants of Revati’s teeth, he turned his gaze.” |
| १७. आश्लेषलोलुपवधूस्तनकार्कश्यसाक्षिनीम् । म्लापयन्नभिमानोष्णैर्वनमालां मुखानिलैः ॥ |
17. “The breeze from his mouth, heated by pride, wilted the forest garland, which bore witness to the hardness of the breasts of the eager-to-embrace women.” |
| १८. दधत् संध्यारुणव्योमस्फुरत्तारानुकारिणीः । द्विषद्द्वेशोपरक्ताङ्गसङ्गिनीः स्वेदविप्रुषः ॥ |
18. “Bearing sweat drops, resembling the stars in the evening sky, tinged with the color of the enemy’s hatred, he shone.” |
| १९. प्रोल्लसत्कूण्डलप्रोतपद्मरागदलत्विषा । कृष्णोत्तरासङ्गरुचिं विदधच्चूतपल्लवीम् ॥ |
19. “With the brilliance of the ruby petals adorning his earrings, Krishna enhanced the beauty of the mango shoots.” |
| २०. ककुद्मिकन्यावक्तान्तर्वासलब्धाधिवासया । मुखामोदं मदिरया कृतानुव्याधमुद्वमन् ॥ |
20. “With the fragrance of liquor emanating from his mouth, which had been perfumed by the breath of the daughter of Kakudmi, he spoke.” |
| २१. जगादवदनच्छद्मपद्मपर्अन्तपातिनः । नयन् मधुलिहः श्वैत्यमुदंशुदशनांशुभिः ॥ |
21. “His words, which pierced the lotus-like lips, were as sweet as honey, and his teeth shone like the rays of the moon.” |
| २२. यद्वासुदेवेनादीनामनादीनवमीरितम् । वचस्तस्य सपदि क्रिया केवलमुत्तरम् ॥ |
22. “The words spoken by Vasudeva, the eternal and the new, were immediately followed by action.” |
| २३. नैतल्लघ्वपि भूयस्या वचो वाचातिशय्यते । इन्धनौधधगप्यग्निस्त्विषा नात्येति पूषणम् ॥ |
23. “Even a small word of great significance surpasses many words. Just as the fire in the fuel surpasses the sun in brilliance.” |
| २४. विरोधवचसो मूकान् वागीशानपि कुर्वते । जडानप्यनुलोमार्थप्रवाचः कृतिनां गिरः ॥ |
24. “The words of the wise, even if brief, make the mute eloquent and the dull articulate.” |
| २५. संक्षिप्तस्याओयतो स्यैव वाक्यस्यार्थगरीयसः । सुविस्तरतरा वाचो भाष्यभूता भवन्तु मे ॥ |
25. “Let my words, though concise, be as weighty as the essence of the sentence, and let them be as expansive as a commentary.” |
| २६. सर्वकार्यशरीरेषु मुक्त्वाङ्गस्कन्धपञ्चकम् । सौगतानामिवात्मान्यो नास्ति मन्त्रो महीभृताम् ॥ |
26. “In all matters, except for the five limbs of the body, there is no mantra for kings, just as the Buddhists have no self.” |
| २७. षड्गुणाः शक्तयस्तिस्रः सिद्धयश्चोदयास्त्रयः । ग्रन्थानधीत्य व्याकर्तुमिति दुर्मेधसो प्यलम् ॥ |
27. “Even the dull-witted can explain the scriptures after studying them, for the six qualities, three powers, and three perfections are sufficient.” |
| २८. अनिर्लोठितकार्य्यस्य वाग्जालं वाग्मिनो वृथा । निमित्तादपराद्धेषोर्धानुश्कस्येव वल्गितम् ॥ |
28. “The speech of an eloquent person is in vain if it does not address the matter at hand, like the aimless wandering of an arrow.” |
| २९. मन्त्रो योध इवाधीरः सर्वाङ्गैः कल्पितैरपि । चिरं न सहते स्थातुं परेभ्यो भेदशङ्कया ॥ |
29. “A mantra, like a warrior, cannot stand for long, even if well-prepared, due to the fear of being exposed by others.” |
| ३०. आत्मोदयः अरज्यानिर्द्वयं नीतिरितीआटि । तदूरीकृत्य कृतिभिर्वाचस्पत्यं प्रतायते ॥ |
30. “The rise of the self and the absence of duality is the essence of policy. This is proclaimed by the wise, disregarding the words of the eloquent.” |
| ३१. तृप्तियोगः अरेणापिउ न महिम्ना महात्मनाम् । पूर्णचन्द्रोदयाकाङ्क्षी दृष्टान्तो त्र महार्णवः ॥ |
31. “The satisfaction of the great is not diminished by the presence of others. Just as the ocean does not diminish the desire for the full moonrise.” |
| ३२. संपदा सुस्थितमन्यो भवति स्वल्पयापि यः । कृततुल्यो विधिर्मन्ये न वर्धयति तस्य ताम् ॥ |
32. “One who is content with little wealth remains stable. I believe that fate does not increase his prosperity.” |
| ३३. समूलघातमघ्नन्तः परान् नोद्यन्ति मानिनः । प्रध्वंसितान्धतमसस्तत्रोदाहरणं रविः ॥ |
33. “The proud do not rise by destroying others completely. The sun is an example of this, as it dispels darkness without uprooting it.” |
| ३४. विपक्षमखिलीकृत्य प्रतिष्ठा खलु दुर्लभा । अनीत्वा पङ्कतां धूलिमुदकं नावतिष्ठते ॥ |
34. “It is difficult to establish oneself after completely destroying the opponent. Just as water does not settle without turning dust into mud.” |
| ३५. ध्रियते यावदेको पि रिपुस्तावत् कुतः शिवम् । पुरः क्लिश्नाति सोमं हि सैंहिकेयो सुरद्रुहाम् । |
35. “As long as even one enemy remains, how can there be peace? The son of Simhika troubles the moon in front of the gods.” |
| ३६. सखा गरीयान् शत्रुश्च कृत्रिमस्तौ हि कार्य्यतः । स्याताममित्रौ मित्रे च सहजप्राकृतावै ॥ |
36. “A friend and an enemy, both artificial, are significant in their actions. They can be natural enemies or friends.” |
| ३७. उपकर्त्ररिणा संधिर्न मित्रेणापकारिणा । उपकारापकारौ हि लक्ष्यं लक्षणमेतयोः ॥ |
37. “An alliance with a benefactor, not with a harmful friend. Beneficence and harm are the characteristics of these two.” |
| ३८. त्वया विप्रकृतश्चैध्यो रुक्मिणीं हरता हरे । बद्धमूलस्य मूलं हि महद्वैरतरोः स्त्रियः । |
38. “You wronged Caidya by abducting Rukmini, O Hari. The root of a great enmity is a woman.” |
| ३९. त्वयि भौमं गते जेतुमसोत्सीत् स पुरीमिमाम् । प्रोषितार्यमणं मेरोरन्धकारस्तटीमिव ॥ |
39. “When you went to defeat Bhuma, he could not conquer this city. Just as darkness cannot cover the mountain when the sun is present.” |
| ४०. आलप्यालमिदं बभ्रोर्यत् स दारानपाहरत् । कथापि खलु पापानामलमश्रेयसे यतः ॥ |
40. “This is enough to say about Babhru, who abducted his wife. The story of the wicked is always unworthy.” |
| ४१. चिराद्ध एवं भवता विराद्धा बहुधा च नः । निर्वर्त्यते रिः क्रियया स श्रुतश्रवसः सुतः ॥ |
41. “For a long time, you have wronged us in many ways. The son of Shrutashravas is fulfilling his duty.” |
| ४२. विधाय वैरं सामर्षे नरो रौ य उदासते । प्रक्षिप्योदर्चिर्षं कक्षे शेरते ते भिमारुतम् । |
42. “A man who remains indifferent after creating enmity is like one who lies down in the forest after throwing a burning torch.” |
| ४३. मनागनभ्यावृत्या वा कामं क्षाम्यतु यः क्षमी । क्रियासमभिहारेणा विराध्यन्तं क्षमेत कः ॥ |
43. “One who forgives easily may forgive. But who can forgive one who wrongs repeatedly?” |
| ४४. अन्यदा भूषणं पुंसः शमो लज्जेव योषितः । पराक्रमः परिव्हवे वैयात्यं सुरतेष्विव ॥ |
44. “Patience is an ornament for a man, like modesty for a woman. Valor in adversity is like futility in love.” |
| ४५. मा जीवन् यः परावज्ञादुःखदग्धो पि जीवति । तस्याजननिरेवास्तु जननीक्लशकारिणः ॥ |
45. “One who lives despite being burned by the pain of insult should not live. His mother should be the cause of his suffering.” |
| ४६. पादाहतं यतुत्थाय मूर्धानमधिरोहति । स्वस्थादेवापमाने इ देहिनस्तद्वरं रजः ॥ |
46. “One who rises after being struck on the foot and places his head on the ground is better than one who remains in insult.” |
| ४७. असंपादयतः कञ्चिदर्थं जतिक्रियागुणैः । यदृच्छाश्ब्दवत् पुंसः संज्ञाहै जन्म केवलम् ॥ |
47. “For one who does not achieve anything with his qualities and actions, life is just a name, like a word without meaning.” |
| ४८. तुङ्गत्वमितरा नाद्रौ नेदं सिन्धावगाधता । अलङ्घनीयताहेतुरुभयं तन्मनस्विनि ॥ |
48. “Height is not the only measure of a mountain, nor depth of an ocean. Both are insurmountable for the noble.” |
| ४९. तुल्ये पराधे अवर्भानुर्भानुमन्तं चिरेण यत् । हिमांशुमाशु ग्रसते तन्म्रदिम्नः स्फुटां फलम् ॥ |
49. “When the offenses are equal, the moon quickly eclipses the sun. This is the clear result of softness.” |
| ५०. स्वयं प्रणमते ल्पे पि परवायावुपेयुषि । निदर्शनमसाराणां लघुर्बहुतृणं नरः ॥ |
50. “A man who bows down even to a small wind is an example of the insignificant. He is like a blade of grass.” |
| ५१. तेजस्वीमध्ये तेजस्वी दवीयानपि गण्यते । पञ्चमः पञ्धतपसस्तपनो जातवेदसाम् ॥ |
51. “Among the brilliant, even the smallest is considered great. The fifth among the five fires is the sun.” |
| ५२. अकृत्वा हेलया पादमु्च्चैर्मूर्धसु विद्विषाम् । कथंकारमनालम्बा कीर्तिर्द्यामधिरोहति ॥ |
52. “Without placing one’s foot on the heads of enemies, how can fame, unsupported, rise to the sky?” |
| ५३. अङ्काधिरोपितमृगश्चन्द्रमा मृगलाञ्छनः । केसरी निष्ठुरक्षुण्ण्मृगपूगो मृगाधिपः ॥ |
53. “The moon, marked by a deer, is placed on the lap. The lion, the king of beasts, is harsh and unyielding.” |
| ५४. चतुर्थोपायसाद्ये पि रिपौ सान्त्वमपक्रिया । स्वेद्यमामज्वरं प्राज्ञः को म्भसा परिषिञ्चति ॥ |
54. “Even if the fourth means is available, conciliation is not appropriate for an enemy. Who sprinkles water on a burning fever?” |
| ५५. सामवादाः सकोपस्य तस्य प्रत्युत दीपकाः । प्रतप्तस्येव सहसा सर्पिषस्तोयबिन्दवः ॥ |
55. “Words of conciliation only inflame the anger of the angry. Like drops of water on hot ghee.” |
| ५६. गुणानामायथातथ्यादर्थं विस्रावयन्ति ये । अमात्यव्यञ्जना राज्ञां दूष्यास्ते शत्रुसंहितः ॥ |
56. “Those who distort the meaning of virtues for their own benefit are the enemies of kings, disguised as ministers.” |
| ५७. स्वशक्त्युपचये केचित् परस्य व्यसने परे । यात्रामाहुरुदासीनं त्वामुत्थापयति द्वयम् ॥ |
57. “Some increase their strength, others take advantage of the enemy’s weakness. The indifferent one is awakened by both.” |
| ५८. लिलङ्घयिषतो लोकानलङ्घ्यानलघीयसः । यादवाम्भोनिधीन् रुन्धे वेलेव भवतः क्षमा ॥ |
58. “Your patience, like a shore, restrains the Yadavas who wish to cross the insurmountable ocean.” |
| ५९. विजयस्त्वयि सेनायाः साक्षिमात्रे पदिश्यताम् । फलभाजि समीक्षोक्ते बुद्धेर्भोग इवात्मनि ॥ |
59. “Victory in battle should be witnessed by you, like the enjoyment of the fruit of wisdom.” |
| ६०. हते हिडीम्बरिपुणा राज्ञि द्वैमातुरे युधि । चिरस्य मित्रव्यसनी सुदमो दमघोषजः ॥ |
60. “When the enemy Hidiimba was killed in battle, the son of Damaghosha, Sudama, was freed from his friend’s suffering.” |
| ६१. नीतिरापदि यद्गम्यः परस्तन्मानिनो हिये । विधुर्विधुंतुदस्येव पूर्णस्तस्योत्सवाय सः ॥ |
61. “Policy is accessible in adversity, but it is difficult for the proud. Like the full moon is a festival for the moon.” |
| ६२. अन्यदुच्छृङ्खलं सत्त्वमन्यच्छास्त्रनियन्त्रितम् । सामानाधिकरण्यं हि तेजस्तिमिरयोः कुतः ॥ |
62. “One nature is unrestrained, another is controlled by scriptures. How can there be equality between brilliance and darkness?” |
| ६३. इन्द्रप्रस्थगमस्तावत् कारि मा सन्तु चेदयः । आस्माकदन्तिसांनिध्यवामनीभूतभूरुहः ॥ |
63. “Let the journey to Indraprastha be undertaken, and let the trees in our vicinity be cut down.” |
| ६४. निरुद्धवीवश्वासारप्रसारां गाइव व्रजम् । उपरुन्धन्तु दाशार्हाः पुरीं माहिष्मतीं द्विषः ॥ |
64. “Let the Dasharhas block the city of Mahishmati, like a cow blocking the flow of milk.” |
| ६५. यजतां पाण्डवः स्वर्गमवत्विन्द्रस्तपस्विनः । वयं हनाम द्विषतः सर्वः स्वार्थं प्रतीहते ॥ |
65. “Let the Pandavas perform sacrifices and attain heaven, and let Indra protect the ascetics. We shall kill the enemies for our own benefit.” |
| ६६. प्राप्यतां विद्युतः संपत् संपर्कादर्करोचिषाम् । शस्त्रैर्द्विषच्छिरश्छेदप्रोच्छोणितोक्षितैः ॥ |
66. “Let the wealth of the lightning be obtained by the contact of the sun’s rays. The blood-stained weapons that cut off the heads of enemies are like the deities painted on the walls of the assembly hall, speaking out of fear with their echoes.” |
| ६७. इति संरम्भिणो वाणीर्बलस्यालेख्यदेवताः । सभाभित्तिप्रतिध्वानैर्भयादन्ववदन्निव ॥ |
67. “Hearing these words, the invincible Lord Adhokshaja instructed his disciple with a glance.” |
| ६८. निशम्य ताः शेषगवीरभिधातुमधोक्षजः । शिष्याय बृहतां पत्युः प्रस्तावमदिशद् दृशा ॥ |
68. “Uddhava, filled with the burden of speech, spoke in front of the elder brother of Gada with truth and vigor.” |
| ६९. भारतीमाहितभरामथानुद्धतमुद्धवः । तथ्यामुतथ्याउजवज्जगादाग्रे गदाग्रजम् ॥ |
69. “Now, the matter is clear, as the wielder of the mace has spoken.” |
| ७०. संप्रत्यसांप्रतं वक्रुमुक्ते मुसलपाणिना । निर्द्धारिते र्थे लेखेन खलूक्त्वा खलु वाचिकम् ॥ |
70. “Even so, the respect you have for me as your teacher is the reason for my speaking.” |
| ७१. तथापि यन्मय्यपि ते गुरुरित्येव गौरवम् । तत् प्रयोजककर्तउत्वमुपैति मम जल्पतः ॥ |
71. “The infinite variety of speech is like the notes of a song composed with a few letters.” |
| ७२. वर्णेः कतिपयैरेव ग्रथितस्य स्वरैरिव । अनन्ता वाङ्मयस्याहो गेयस्येव विचित्रता ॥ |
72. “Even if it is scattered, it is spoken clearly. The connection without interruption is difficult to achieve.” |
| ७३. बह्वपि स्वच्छया कामं प्रकीर्णमभिधीयते । अनुञ्झिताभिसंबन्धः प्रबन्धो दुरुदाहरः ॥ |
73. “The skilled ones spread their speech like a colorful cloth, even if it is small, adorned with many qualities.” |
| ७४. भ्रदीयसीमपि धनामनल्पगुणकल्पिताम् । प्रसारयन्ति कुशलश्चित्रां वाचं पटीमिव ॥ |
74. “The weapon of the knowledgeable is accepted in front of others. The stability of the speaker’s qualities is the reason.” |
| ७५. विशेषविदुषः शस्त्रं यत् तदोद्ग्राह्यते पुरः । हेतुः परिचयस्थैर्ये वक्तुर्गुणनिकैव सा ॥ |
75. “The master with wisdom and enthusiasm should strive to achieve it in himself. These are the roots of the wealth of the one who desires to conquer.” |
| ७६. प्रज्ञोत्साहावतः स्वामी यतेताधातुमात्मनि । तौ हि मूलमुदेष्यन्त्या जिगीषोरात्मसंपदः ॥ |
76. “The wise ones who place their firm intellect on a stable foundation do not feel fatigue.” |
| ७७. सोपधानां धियं धीराः स्थेयसीं खट्वयन्ति ये । तत्रानिशं निषण्णास्ते जानते जातु न श्रमम् ॥ |
77. “The sharp ones touch like arrows and enter a little inside. The thick ones, even if they touch a lot, stay outside like a beam of light.” |
| ७८. स्पृशन्ति शरवत् तीक्ष्णाः स्तोकमन्तर्विशन्ति च । बहुस्पृशापि स्थूलेन स्थीयते वहिरश्मवत् ॥ |
78. “The ignorant ones start small things and become busy. The wise ones with great undertakings remain calm.” |
| ७९. आरभन्ते ल्पमेवाज्ञाः कामं व्यग्रा भवन्ति च । महारम्भाः कृतधियस्तिष्ठन्ति च निराकुलाः ॥ |
79. “The wealth of the one who is careless is destroyed even if he follows the method. The hunter does not kill the deer while lying down.” |
| ८०. उपायमास्थितस्यापि नश्यत्यर्थः प्रमाद्यतः । हन्ति नोपशय्स्थो पि शयालुर्मृगयुर्मृगान् ॥ |
80. “The one who desires to conquer is like the sun among the twelve Adityas, rising alone.” |
| ८१. उदेतुमत्यजन्नीहां राजसु द्वादशस्वपि । जिगीषुरेको दिनकृदादित्येष्विव कल्पते ॥ |
81. “The enemies, like the serpents, are controlled by the king with the methods of Tantra and Yoga.” |
| ८२. तन्त्रावापविदा योगैर्मण्डलान्यधिष्ठिता । सुनिग्रहा नरेन्द्रेण फणीन्द्रा इव शत्रवः ॥ |
82. “The tree of enthusiasm, with the roots of wisdom and strength, bears fruit with the support of the powerful.” |
| ८३. करप्रचेयामुत्तुङ्गः प्रभुशक्तिं प्रथीयसीम् । प्रज्ञाबलबृहन्मूलः फलत्युत्साहपादपः ॥ |
83. “The king, with the weapon of intellect, the shield of wealth, the eye of the spy, and the mouth of the messenger, is like a person.” |
| ८४. बुद्धिशस्त्रः प्रकृत्यङ्गो धनसंवृतिकञ्चुकः । चारेक्षणो दूतमुखः पुरूषः को पि पार्थिवः ॥ |
84. “The brilliance and patience of the king who knows the time are not one-sided. The strength and grace of the poet who knows the essence are not one.” |
| ८५. तेजः क्षमा वा नैकान्तः कालज्ञस्य महीपतेः । नैकमोजः प्रसादो वा रसभागविदः कवेः ॥ |
85. “The one who has committed an offense, even if not revealed, becomes angry like a disease at the right time.” |
| ८६. कृतापचारो पि परैरनाविष्कृतविक्रियः । असाध्यः कुरूते कोपं प्राप्ते काले गदो यथा ॥ |
86. “The soft one, with hidden brilliance, plans to enjoy the wealth. The lamp takes oil with the inner wick.” |
| ८७. मृदुव्यवहितं तेजो भोक्तुमर्थान् प्रकल्पते । प्रदीपः स्नेहमादत्ते दशया ह्यन्तरस्थया ॥ |
87. “The wise one does not rely on fate or sit idle in effort. The learned one expects both words and meanings like a good poet.” |
| ८८. नालम्बते दैष्टिकतां न निषीदति पौरुषे । शब्दार्थौ सत्कविरिव द्वयं विद्वानपेक्षते ॥ |
88. “The emotions move in the stable matter like the transient ones. The many emotions of the king are like the many tastes of a single essence.” |
| ८९. स्थायिनो र्थे प्रवर्तन्ते भावाः संचारिणो यथा । रसस्यैकस्य भूयांसस्तथा नेतुर्महीभृतः ॥ |
89. “The kings who desire to conquer become followers like the other notes of a scale.” |
| ९०. अनल्पत्वात् प्रधानत्वादंशस्येवेतरे स्वराः । विजिगीषोर्नृपतयः प्रयान्ति परिवारताम् ॥ |
90. “The qualities of the one who has not started are produced by others. The words travel in the sky like sounds.” |
| ९१. अप्यनारभमाणस्य विनोरुत्पादिताः परैः । व्रजन्ति गुणतामर्थाः शब्दा इव विहायसः ॥ |
91. “The leader shines more in the garland of followers.” |
| ९२. यातव्यपार्ष्णिग्राहादिमालायामधिकद्युतिः । एकार्थतन्तुप्रोतायां नायको नायकायते ॥ |
92. “The six qualities should be used with strength and the essence of the methods. The parts of the strong one become stable and powerful.” |
| ९३. षाड्गुण्यमुपयुञ्जीत शक्त्यपेक्षं रसायनम् । भवन्त्यस्यैवमङ्गानि स्थास्नूनि बलवन्ति च ॥ |
93. “The six qualities should be used with strength and the essence of the methods. The parts of the strong one become stable and powerful.” |
| ९४. स्थाने शमवतां शक्त्या व्यायामे वृद्धिरङ्गिनाम् । अयथाबलमारम्भो निदानं क्षयसंपदः ॥ |
94. “The strength of the peaceful ones increases in the right place. The inappropriate effort is the cause of the destruction of wealth.” |
| ९५. तदीशितारं चेदीनां भवांस्तमवमंस्त मा । निहन्त्यरीनेकपदे स उदात्तः स्वरानिव ॥ |
95. “Do not underestimate the ruler of the Chedis. He destroys enemies in many places like the high notes.” |
| ९६. मा वेदि यदसावेको जेतव्यश्चेदिराडिति । राजयक्ष्मेव रोगाणां समूहः स महीभृताम् ॥ |
96. “Do not think that the king of the Chedis is the only one to be conquered. He is like the royal disease among the kings.” |
| ९७. संपादितफलस्तेन सपक्षः परभेदतः । कार्मुकेणेव गुणिना बाणः संधानमेष्यति ॥ |
97. “The arrow, with the support of the bow, will reach the target.” |
| ९८. ये चान्ये कालयवनसाल्वरुक्मिद्रुमादयः । तमःस्वभावास्ते प्येनं प्रदोषमनुयायिनः ॥ |
98. “The others like Kalayavana, Shalva, and Rukmi are like darkness.” |
| ९९. उपजापः कृतस्तेन तानाकोपवतस्त्वयि । आशु दीपयिताल्पो पि साग्नीनेधानिवानिलः ॥ |
99. “The conspiracy made by him will quickly ignite like a small fire with wind.” |
| १००. बृहत्सहायः कार्यान्तं क्षोदीयानपि गच्छति । संभूयाम्भोधिमभ्येति महानद्या नगापगा ॥ |
100. “The small one, with the help of the great, reaches the end of the task. The great river reaches the ocean by joining with the small streams.” |
| १०१. तस्य मित्राण्यमित्रास्ते ये च ये चोभये नृपाः । अभियुक्तं त्वयैनं गन्तारस्त्वामतः पते ॥ |
101. “Let the friends and enemies of that king, and those who are neutral, all come to you, O Lord, as you are the protector.” |
| १०२. मखविघ्नाय सकलमित्थमुत्थाप्य राजकम् । हन्त जातमजातारेः प्रथमेन त्वयारिणा ॥ |
102. “To obstruct the sacrifice, the entire kingdom was raised, and the first enemy of the unborn one was born.” |
| १०३. संभाष्य त्वामतिभ्रक्षमस्कन्धं सुबान्धवः । सहायमध्वरधुरं धर्मराजो विवक्षते ॥ |
103. “After conversing with you, the wise and strong friends, the Dharma King desires to assist in the burden of the sacrifice.” |
| १०४. महात्मानो नुगृह्णन्ति भजमानान् रिपूनपि । सपत्नीः प्रापयन्त्यब्धिं सिन्धवो नगनिम्नगाः ॥ |
104. “Great souls help even those who serve their enemies, just as rivers, even when obstructed, reach the ocean.” |
| १०५. चिरादपि बलात्कारो बलिनः सिद्ध्ये रिषु । छन्दानुवृत्तिदुःसाधाः सुहृदो विमनीकृताः ॥ |
105. “Even after a long time, the forceful actions of the strong succeed against enemies. Friends who are difficult to please by following their wishes are disheartened.” |
| १०६. मन्यसे रिवधः श्रेयान् प्रीतये नाकिनामिति । पुरोडाशभुजामिष्टमिष्टं कर्तुमलन्तराम् ॥ |
106. “You think that killing the enemy is better for the pleasure of the gods, just as the sacrificial offering is dear to those who partake in it.” |
| १०७. अमृतं नाम यत्सन्तो मन्त्रजिह्वेषु जुह्वति । शोभैव मन्दरक्षुब्धक्षुभिताम्भोधिवर्णना ॥ |
107. “The nectar that the saints offer with their tongues in the mantras is like the description of the ocean churned by Mount Mandara.” |
| १०८. प्रतीक्ष्यं च प्रतीक्ष्यायै पितृष्वस्रे सुतस्य ते । सहिष्ये शतमागांसि प्रत्यश्रौषीः किलेति यत् ॥ |
108. “Your son’s aunt, waiting for the right time, will endure a hundred offenses, as you have heard.” |
| १०९. तीक्ष्णा नारुन्तुदा बुद्धिः कर्म शान्तं प्रतापयत् । नोपतापि मनः सोष्म वागेका वाग्मिनः सतः ॥ |
109. “The sharp and painful intellect makes the peaceful action shine. The mind of the wise one does not burn, only the speech of the eloquent one does.” |
| ११०. स्वयंकृतेप्रसादस्य तस्याह्रो भानुमानिव । समयावधिमप्राप्य नान्तायालं भवानपि ॥ |
110. “The one who has created his own grace, like the sun, does not reach the end of time. Even you, O Lord, cannot reach the end.” |
| १११. कृत्वा कृत्यविदस्तीर्थैरतः प्रणिधयः पदम् । विदांकुवन्तु महतस्तलं विद्विषदम्भसः ॥ |
111. “The wise ones, having performed their duties, should place their feet on the path of the great ones. Let them make the enemies fall into the depths of the ocean.” |
| ११२. अनुत्सूत्रपदन्यासा सद्वृत्तिः सन्निबन्धना । शब्दविद्येव नाभाति राजनीतिरपस्पशा ॥ |
112. “The good conduct, like the science of words, does not shine without proper arrangement.” |
| ११३. अज्ञातदोषैर्दोषज्ञैरूद्दूष्यो भयवेतनैः । भेद्याः शत्रोरभिव्यक्तशासनैः सामवायिकाः ॥ |
113. “The faults unknown to the fault-knowers are to be feared by those who are paid to be vigilant. The enemies, who are to be divided, are to be subdued by the manifest commands.” |
| ११४. उपेयिवांसि कर्तारः पुरीमाजातशास्त्रवीन् । राजन्यकान्युपायज्ञैरेकार्थानि चरैस्तव ॥ |
114. “The doers who have entered the city, having learned the scriptures, are to be united by the spies with a common purpose.” |
| ११५. सविशेषं सुते पाण्डोर्भक्तिं भवति तन्वति । वैरायितास्तरलाः स्वयं मत्सरिणः परे ॥ |
115. “The special devotion to the son of Pandu is extended by you. The enemies, who are jealous, become unstable by themselves.” |
| ११६. य इहात्मविदो विपक्षमध्ये सहसंवृद्धियुजो पि भूभुजः स्युः । बलिपृष्टकुलादिवान्यपुष्टैः पृथगस्मादचिरेण भाविता तैः ॥ |
116. “Those who know the self, even among the enemies, grow together like the offspring of the same family.” |
| ११७. सहजचापलदोषसमुद्धत- श्चलितदुर्बलपक्षपरिग्रहः । तव दुरासदवीर्यविभावसौ शलभतां लभतामसुहृद्गणः ॥ |
117. “The weak ones, who are naturally fickle and have weak allies, should be like moths to your invincible valor.” |
| ११८. इति विशकलितार्थामौद्दवीं वाचमेना- मनुगतनयमार्गामर्गलां दुर्नयस्य । जनितमुदस्थादुच्चकैरुच्छ्रितोरः- स्थलनियतनिषण्णश्रीश्रुतां शुश्रुवान् सः ॥ |
118. “Thus, the words of the angry one, filled with distorted meanings, following the path of the sons, obstructed by the bad policy, were heard by him, who was adorned with the glory of the elevated chest, having heard the fame of the great ones.” |
